Kallur Lighthouse – Kalsoy's Iconic Hike

Kallur Lighthouse – The Iconic Hike on Kalsoy

At the northern end of the narrow island of Kalsoy, a small red-and-white lighthouse stands surrounded by some of the most dramatic scenery in the Faroe Islands.

This is Kallur Lighthouse, or Kallurin in Faroese.

The lighthouse itself is modest. What makes Kallur extraordinary is everything around it: steep green mountains, towering sea cliffs and uninterrupted views across the North Atlantic. Reaching it is also part of the experience, requiring a ferry journey to Kalsoy, a trip through the island’s narrow tunnels and finally a hike from the tiny village of Trøllanes.

Today, Kallur is one of the best-known viewpoints in the Faroe Islands and one of the highlights of a visit to the Northern Islands.

Why Is Kallur Lighthouse So Famous?

Kallur Lighthouse has become one of the defining images of the Faroe Islands.

But unlike many famous landmarks, the lighthouse isn’t really the star of the show.

It’s the location.

Kallur sits at the northern end of Kalsoy, where the island narrows into a spectacular landscape of steep mountains and cliffs dropping towards the Atlantic. The small lighthouse provides a sense of scale against the enormous landscape surrounding it.

The journey there adds to the experience. You don’t simply pull into a roadside viewpoint, take a photograph and leave. Getting to Kallur means travelling to Kalsoy, crossing the island and walking through the landscape yourself.

That makes Kallur feel like a destination rather than just another viewpoint.

Where Is Kallur Lighthouse?

Kallur Lighthouse is located near Trøllanes, the northernmost village on Kalsoy in the Northern Islands of the Faroe Islands.

Kalsoy itself is long and narrow, with mountains separating its small villages. A 17-kilometre road connects the ferry terminal at Syðradalur with Trøllanes and passes through four road tunnels along the way.

The lighthouse stands beyond Trøllanes at the northern end of the island.

You cannot drive directly to Kallur Lighthouse. The final part of the journey must be completed on foot.

Getting to Kalsoy – Part of the Adventure

Visiting Kallur requires a little more planning than many Faroese attractions, but that’s also part of what makes the trip memorable.

Ferry from Klaksvík to Kalsoy

The journey begins in Klaksvík, the main town of the Northern Islands.

Ferry route 56 connects Klaksvík with Syðradalur on Kalsoy. The crossing takes approximately 20 minutes. The current ferry has limited vehicle capacity, which makes bringing a car less convenient during busy periods.

Official tourism guidance recommends considering leaving your car in Klaksvík and travelling around Kalsoy by public transport because the roads are narrow and parking is limited.

Important: Ferry schedules can change, so always check the current timetable with Strandfaraskip Landsins before travelling.

From Syðradalur to Trøllanes

After arriving on Kalsoy, continue north towards Trøllanes.

Public bus route 506 connects the villages on Kalsoy and is coordinated with ferry connections.

The road itself is an experience.

Kalsoy’s narrow shape, mountains and series of tunnels have earned it the nickname “the flute.” The island has four villages — Syðradalur, Húsar, Mikladalur and Trøllanes — scattered along its eastern side.

Eventually, you emerge at Trøllanes, where the hike to Kallur begins.

The Hike to Kallur Lighthouse

From Trøllanes, the landscape quickly opens up as you walk north towards Kallur.

The tour is approximately 1.5–2 hours for the return hike and the route is moderately easy.

However, Faroese weather can dramatically change hiking conditions.

Rain can make grassy terrain slippery, while fog can reduce visibility very quickly. Strong winds are another important consideration, particularly around exposed terrain and cliffs.

Don’t judge a Faroese hike purely by its distance.

Check the weather before leaving, wear suitable footwear and avoid exposed areas when conditions are poor.

The View That Makes Kallur Special

Eventually, the little lighthouse comes into view.

And this is where you understand why you’ve made the journey.

Kallur Lighthouse stands against an enormous backdrop of green mountains and Atlantic Ocean. From the surrounding area, the landscape opens towards the neighbouring Northern Islands, creating one of the most dramatic coastal panoramas in the country.

The lighthouse was built in 1927, but its simple architecture is almost secondary to the scenery surrounding it.

It is this contrast — a tiny human structure surrounded by immense cliffs and mountains — that has made Kallur one of the most recognizable places in the Faroe Islands.

Kallur and James Bond

Kalsoy’s international profile grew even further following the release of No Time to Die in 2021.

Parts of the 25th James Bond film were shot on Kalsoy, using its dramatic landscape as a filming location.

Visitors can also find the locally created James Bond gravestone near the Kallur area, which has become an attraction of its own. Official tourism information now even references the gravestone as part of the experience around Kallur.

For Bond fans, this makes Kalsoy one of the more unusual filming locations you can visit in the Faroe Islands.

Don't Visit Kalsoy Just for Kallur

This is important.

If you’ve already taken the ferry across, don’t immediately leave after the Kallur hike.

Kalsoy deserves more time.

Mikladalur and the Seal Woman

On the journey back south, stop in Mikladalur.

The village is closely associated with the Faroese legend of Kópakonan — the Seal Woman.

Today, a striking statue of the Seal Woman stands beside the ocean at Stórakneysa in Mikladalur.

How Much Does the Kallur Hike Cost?

There is currently a mandatory visitor fee to hike to Kallur Lighthouse.

The official 2026 information lists:

  • Adults: 200 DKK
  • Ages 13–17: 100 DKK
  • Under 13: Free

The fee does not include a guide, and credit cards are accepted on site.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Kallur?

Kallur is highly exposed to Faroese weather, so conditions matter more than the month on the calendar.

Clear weather provides the best opportunity to appreciate the surrounding mountains and islands, while fog can completely obscure the landscape.

Summer generally provides much longer daylight hours, making it easier to combine Kallur with other attractions on Kalsoy.

Regardless of season, always check the forecast before beginning the hike.

What to Bring

For the Kallur hike, we recommend bringing:

  • Waterproof and windproof clothing
  • Good walking or hiking shoes
  • Water
  • A charged phone
  • An extra warm layer
  • Snacks if you’re spending the day on Kalsoy

Even when conditions look good in Trøllanes, Faroese weather can change quickly.

Plan Your Visit to Kallur Lighthouse

Kallur isn’t the easiest attraction in the Faroe Islands to reach — and that’s part of its appeal.

The ferry from Klaksvík, the journey through Kalsoy’s tunnels, the tiny village of Trøllanes and the final walk towards the lighthouse all become part of the experience.

If you’re planning the rest of your trip, you can browse experiences across the Faroe Islands or explore our other attraction guides for ideas on what to see next.
