Bøur Village

Bøur – The Postcard Village of the Faroe Islands

Bøur is one of those villages that looks like it was designed for a postcard — tiny wooden houses with turf roofs, a white church, and a view so dramatic it barely seems real. From the shore of Bøur, you can see the jagged peaks of Tindhólmur, the famous sea stacks Drangarnir, and the island of Gáshólmur rising straight out of the Atlantic.

It’s peaceful, small, unbelievably scenic, and one of the most photographed places in the Faroe Islands. If you’re exploring Vágar, Bøur is a must-stop.

What Makes Bøur Special?

Bøur is best known for its incredible view — one of the most iconic landscapes in the Faroes. But the village itself is full of charm:

  • Traditional black timber houses

  • Quiet streets and local life

  • The beautiful Bøur Church, dating back to 1865

  • A peaceful shoreline perfect for photos

  • One of the best sunset locations on the islands

The combination of village charm and dramatic scenery makes Bøur stand out from any other destination on Vágar.

Where is Bøur Located?

Bøur sits on the north side of Sørvágsfjørður about:

  • 5 minutes from Sørvágur

  • 7 minutes from the Vágar Airport

  • 5 minutes from Gásadalur / Múlafossur

  • 10 minutes from the departure point of Drangarnir boat tours

Because it’s so close to everything, Bøur is often included in many Vágar day trips — and it’s one of the easiest villages to visit.

The Viewpoint – Tindhólmur, Drangarnir & Gáshólmur

The viewpoint above the village is one of the most famous photography spots in the country.

From here, you see:

  • Tindhólmur’s five dragon-like peaks

  • Stóri and Lítli Drangur (Drangarnir) rising out of the sea

  • The green island of Gáshólmur

  • Waves crashing against the coast far below

  • The sun setting in the west behind the islands

It’s dramatic, breathtaking, and iconic.
This is one of those places where you simply stop and stare.

Life in Bøur – A Small Village With Big Scenery

Bøur is quiet — very quiet. Only a handful of people live here, and daily life is slow and peaceful. Walking through the village feels like stepping back in time.

Expect:

  • Narrow roads

  • Old turf-roof houses

  • A small river running through the village

  • Children playing outside

  • Sheep wandering around nearby cliffs

It’s one of the most authentic villages in the Faroe Islands, untouched by modern tourism.

Coastal Walks & Hidden Spots

Bøur is small, but the area around it offers some wonderful walking paths and viewpoints.

The Shoreline

A short walk down to the beach gives you close-up views of the Atlantic, with Tindhólmur rising in the distance. It’s peaceful, quiet, and one of the best low-angle photography spots.

When to Visit Bøur

Bøur is beautiful in any weather, but especially:

  • Late afternoon / evening → perfect golden light on Tindhólmur

  • Summer → long bright nights

  • Winter → dramatic contrasts, big waves, and atmospheric fog

Even on rainy days, the mist rolling over Tindhólmur gives the scene an unforgettable mood.
