Private Northern Islands Tour

Discover some of the wildest landscapes in the Faroe Islands on a Private Northern Islands Tour with your own local driver-guide.

The Northern Islands are characterised by towering mountains, deep fjords, colourful fishing villages, narrow tunnels, and a strong connection to the North Atlantic. On this private experience, you’ll travel north from Tórshavn and explore destinations including Leirvík, Klaksvík, Kunoy, and Viðareiði.

However, this tour is about much more than sightseeing. Along the way, your guide will introduce you to Viking history, Faroese legends, fishing culture, historic villages, and stories about life in some of the country’s most remote communities.

Because this is a private tour, the experience is exclusively for you and your group, allowing for a more personal way to discover the Northern Islands.

Journey North from Tórshavn

Your private Northern Islands adventure begins with pickup from your accommodation at approximately 09:00.

Meeting Point

Pickup from your accommodation. Please provide your pickup location when booking.

As this is a private tour, alternative pickup times may be possible depending on availability and your plans for the day.

From Tórshavn, you’ll travel north through the spectacular Eysturoy Tunnel.

The approximately 11-kilometre subsea tunnel connects Streymoy and Eysturoy and contains the world’s first underwater roundabout, surrounded by artwork from Faroese artist Tróndur Patursson.

After emerging on Eysturoy, the journey continues north through a constantly changing landscape of mountains and fjords.

Leirvík – Vikings and Avalanches

After approximately 45 minutes, you’ll make a stop in Leirvík.

The village provides an introduction to the history of this part of the Faroe Islands. Here, your guide will share stories about Vikings, avalanches, and abandoned settlements.

From Leirvík, the journey continues through a second subsea tunnel and into the Northern Islands.

Klaksvík – Fishing, Culture and Faroese Life

Next, you’ll arrive in Klaksvík, the second-largest town in the Faroe Islands and the country’s largest fishing town.

Surrounded by steep mountains and built around a protected bay, Klaksvík has developed around its close relationship with the sea.

Fishing remains central to the town. Trawlers move in and out of the harbour, while a giant metal fishing-hook sculpture reflects the industry’s importance to the local community.

However, Klaksvík is not only about fishing. The town has also become an important cultural centre, hosting festivals, sporting events, and other activities throughout the year.

From Klaksvík, your private journey continues deeper into the Northern Islands.

Kunoy – Between Mountains and Fjords

Reaching Kunoy is an experience in itself.

First, you’ll cross a winding causeway before travelling through an approximately three-kilometre-long, narrow single-lane tunnel through the mountain.

On the other side lies the peaceful village of Kunoy.

A small stream runs between colourful houses while enormous mountains rise immediately behind the settlement. In the past, locals even crossed these steep mountains when travelling to church.

Weather permitting, you’ll also have beautiful views across towards neighbouring Kalsoy, where a chain of steep mountains and deep green valleys dominates the horizon.

Kunoy provides an excellent example of how closely Faroese villages are connected to the surrounding landscape.

Viðareiði – The Northernmost Village in the Faroe Islands

The journey then continues to Viðareiði, the northernmost village in the Faroe Islands.

Situated on Viðoy, the village lies in a broad valley surrounded by some of the country’s most impressive mountains.

To the north rises Villingadalsfjall, reaching 844 metres above sea level. Beyond it lies Cape Enniberg, with enormous cliffs rising approximately 754 metres from the North Atlantic.

The landscape alone makes Viðareiði worth visiting, but the village also has a fascinating history.

It was the birthplace of Faroese poet and academic Christian Matras, one of the most significant figures in Faroese literature.

Viðareiði also has a remarkable maritime story. After the British brig Marwood was wrecked near the village during a winter storm in 1847, local residents helped rescue the crew. The British government later presented church silver to the village as thanks for the rescue.

Lunch During Your Private Tour

Lunch is included as part of your private Northern Islands experience.

EXP FAE aims to provide lunch at a restaurant, café, or through a local Faroese dining experience where possible.

The exact lunch arrangement can vary depending on availability and the day’s itinerary.

Beverages are also included.

A Private Way to Explore the Northern Islands

One of the main advantages of choosing the private Northern Islands Tour is having your own driver-guide throughout the experience.

Rather than joining a scheduled group departure, the tour is reserved for you and your travelling companions.

This creates a more relaxed experience and gives your guide greater flexibility to adapt the day to local conditions and your interests.

Throughout the journey, you’ll hear stories about Vikings, local heroes, legends, fishing traditions, historic churches, abandoned settlements, and life in the Northern Islands.

Meanwhile, the scenery constantly changes as you travel through tunnels, alongside fjords, beneath enormous mountains, and between remote villages.
